Thoughts & Feels
Election Day, 2020 – In these times of great uncertainty, today is so uncertain and the stakes are so high for our country, the world, and our individual lives, that we’re being tested like never before to stay centered in not knowing.
When it comes to racism, the first thing many of us white folk need to confront is the numbness in our own hearts. We've been told we should be outraged, or full of grief, or at least empathetic. We might even convince ourselves that we feel these ways, but if we acknowledge what we actually feel in our hearts, it could be more nothing than something. Maybe we feel some tightness. I was facilitating a racial healing workshop and a Black co-facilitator courageously shared how crazy-making it is to be Black in America, knowing that racism exists, feeling its noxious presence under the surface in daily interactions, but not being able to pinpoint it. I recently had the pleasure of being interviewed on Mike Mantell's podcast. He is a phenomenally engaging interviewer, and the whole conversation was a blast, but this particular 17-minute segment on selling was so especially rich that I asked permission to pre-release it.
With everything going on in the world right now, now isn't the time for a "ra ra" goal-setting workshop. It's not a time for ego-driven, overly-ambitious goals that stress us (and everyone around us) out. But it's also not a time to collapse and give up on dreams and aspirations. This year's Goal Fulfillment Masterclass is about finding that sweet center, that middle path.
